How to Take Notes Ayesha Chawla and Caroline Oeding
The art of note taking is an essential skill to master especially in the high school or college years. Note taking style can be a snapshot of someone's personality. Are you lazy, over the top, or just plain crazy? Find out here with this list of the typical note takers you find in a classroom:
1. Paper Waster: Everyone knows one of these people- they write down entire pages of notes word for word. The pages upon pages may seem intimidating, but you know you can always rely on these types of people for all of the facts. However, the Paper Waster writes notes like a machine. They write down the whole lecture but neglect to remember the important parts when it’s time to test.
2. TheArtist: Color and doodles are their best friend when it comes to note taking. Pages dripping in colorful ink and drawings in the margins are common when it comes to The Artist. Unfortunately, this might not be the best note taking style, for all the color could become messy and overwhelming.
3. Short and Bitter: This person might not be the best person to study with because of their limited amount of notes and knowledge. They write down one or two sentences worth of notes and hope their friend has the rest. However, if their friend is also a Short and Bitter when it comes to note taking, then they might be out of luck!
All in all, choose the note taking style that works best for you and will allow for success. Just remember to hit the highlights and refrain from writing down too much.
Story #2: How to Be Productive
How to be Productive Caroline Oeding & Ayesha Chawla
As a freshman, making the transition from middle school to high school can be a challenge, especially when it comes to the difference in workload. Procrastination can be hard to avoid when you don't have the right tools to set yourself up for success. Time management and organization skills are key in high school, so here are some tips and tricks to help you be more productive in your studies-
The first and most important tip is to identify the reason for your procrastination. For most people, it seems to be technology. Many people suggest putting your technology in another room when you work so that you are not tempted; however, if you are in need of something more disciplined, there are a few free apps that you can download to maintain control. For example, Focus Now and Self Control are great apps to download that block your usage of certain apps and websites for a certain period of time.
The second tip we have for you is to have a planner or use your phone to keep track of due dates and assignments that way you know exactly what you need to do when you get home. Most people carry around their phone to each of their classes, so it is a good place to store your to do list.
The third tip we have for you is to make a study plan when you have a test or exam. It is better to try to spread out study time instead of cramming because that can lead to feeling overwhelmed and result in giving up.
When doing your homework, it is best to do it as soon as you can after school and not put it off. If you find that you are more productive in a different environment, such as the library, then that is something you should definitely consider.
Finding a friend that you can study with productively and ask questions with can be beneficial depending on your needs. However, if you enjoy studying alone, creating a music playlist that allows you to concentrate is a good idea.
All in all, making a routine and developing good habits is not something that can happen overnight. Make sure you remain consistent with your routine because your work ethics is what will drive you to success in the future.
